7 Dangers Of Overweight And Obesity

Being overweight and Obese are two different health conditions which are closely related. Obesity basically is defined as having Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 and above, while if you have the BMI of 25.1 to 29.9 you are considered to be just Overweight.

The health risks of obesity and Overweight are the same but Risk increases with BMI. This means that a person with BMI of 29 is healthier than a person with BMI of 30. Check out how BMI is Measured if you want to know your BMI.

The Normal BMI is between 18.5 and 25kg/m².

Below is a list of Dangers of Obesity or Being overweight.

1. High Blood pressure (Hypertension)

Being overweight or Obese is directly linked with an increase in blood pressure and Hypertension. On those who already have Hypertension (High Blood Pressure), it becomes difficult to control it if the person has High BMI. An increase in Central body fat increases Total peripheral resistance (ability of blood to flow easily in the blood vessels). As a result of this, Obesity is regarded as one of the direct causes of Hypertension. Another mechanism is through an increase in fat that is inside the blood vessels called atherosclerosis.

2. Depression and Stress

Overweight causes Depression in different ways. These people usually suffer from low self-esteem because of their body shape and the discrimination they get from the community. In other instances Overweight people are depressed by the fact that they try to loose weight but the efforts are failing. Obesity itself can cause depression because the fat cells in the body actively secrete Free Oxygen Radicals, which cause chronic inflammation and high cortisol levels. All this leads to depressed mood.

3. Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea is a condition in which a person stop breathing for a few seconds during sleep because the neck is blocked by the tongue and soft tissues of the neck. It happens many times each night and the person suffering from it does not notice at all. It is caused by accumulation of fat around the neck which compress the airway at night. This leads to interrupted sleep and being tired during the day. Obese people also snore, which badly affects their partners or family members.

4. Diabetes Mellitus

Overweight and Obesity causes Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. This happens through Increased insulin Resistance which happens when a person has High BMI. Remember a person get fat because there is excess food than the body need to spend, the Body then secret High amount of insulin to try to eliminate excess food (calories) and energy but this leads to insulin resistance and later Diabetes Mellitus.

5.Erectile Dysfunction

One of the causes of Weak erection and Erectile Dysfunction in general is Obesity and Overweight. This happens because; One, the Penis size decreases when the person has central Obesity (Big belly). Two, the excess fat prevents normal blood flow to the penis, leading to weak erections and unsatisfactory performance by the man. all this has very bad outcome for both partners and can even end relationship or marriage.

This Should be the main reason to start weight loss program for Men.

6.Stomach Ulcers

Central obesity which by now you know is bad causes Stomach Ulcers, a condition Known as Peptic ulcer disease. This happens because the belly fat compresses the stomach when a fat person sleeps on their Back, that causes stomach acid to go higher and erode the part of the stomach that is not Protected. A reduction in weight and taking Antacids usually Eliminate the problem.

7.Arthritis and Chronic pain

The Last but not least bad thing about Overweight and Obesity is the early development of Osteoarthritis (a form of Arthritis). This happens Mostly in the Knees and Ankles as these joints carry the whole 100Kg and more of the body. even if the person Does not have clear-cut Arthritis, they usually have pains in their Joints from time to time because of microtrauma that happens when moving around during the day.


Weight management is a very important Section of Life in order to live longer and happier. Actually we do not have a choice on this one because if you’re fat, there’s a high chance that you have or will have one of the above conditions.
