Teratogen is any drug or medicine that negatively affect an unborn child if taken by or administered to the pregnant mother. The damage can either be structural, that is affect the child in such a way that they are born with visible abnormalities, or it can be functional, affecting how the child behaves or moves after they are born.
There is a large number of Teratogenic drugs which the Doctors usually check before prescribing. The list ranges from medicines used to treat chronic conditions like Epilepsy and Diabetes to some antibiotics like Mebendazole among others. Even alcohol is Teratogenic as it causes Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS).
It is important to alert your Doctor if you’re pregnant or planning to be pregnant whenever you are sick to protect the unborn child.
